OUTREACH

WE BELIEVE ALL OLDER PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE ACCESS TO THE BENEFITS OF CONTEMPORARY DANCE

They deserve to be seen and valued in the performing arts.

Older people are as diverse as the rest of the population.

We encourage participation which reflects this and reach out to underrepresented and marginalised groups.

Our outreach work takes dance to people who cannot access our main studio at Brighton’s Dance Space and to those who may never have considered dance as an activity still open to them in their 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

I never expected to find so much joy in dancing with other people of my own age.”

Thanks to the generous support of funders like the Postcode Society and Brighton and Hove City Council, we’re able to bring dance classes and workshops directly to communities across Brighton and Hove.

By collaborating with partners such as the Black and Minority Ethnic Community Partnership, Brighton Ageing Well, and the Active for Life team, we reach those who might otherwise miss out, making sure everyone has the chance to experience the power of dance.

In 2023/24 we provided 26 outreach sessions, and 144 classes for 486 older people in senior housing, care homes, community clubs and events, including at:

  • The Hawks 50+ multicultural group, Whitehawk

  • The Hop 50+, Hove

  • Hangleton & Knoll Project / Hangleton Community Centre

  • Patching Lodge supported housing

  • Together Co social prescribing

  • Tower House Community Centre

  • Ageing Well Festival

  • South East Dance’s ‘Our City Dances’

  • Brighton & Hove City Council's Take Part Festival

We’re happy to collaborate on existing plans or explore new partnerships and projects together.

We actively listen to our participants, learning about the barriers they face and their unique experiences, challenges, and cultural needs.

This year, with researchers from Chichester University, we completed a study on our dancers' participation to guide our programme and outreach work.
